Fish species found in the lake include: blue catfish, channel catfish, hybrid striped bass, largemouth bass and redfish (red drum), with the latter being the most prevalent. Boat ramps, boat rentals, lighted fishing piers and a fish cleaning station are available.

Lake Houston has been stocked with species of fish intended to improve the utility of the reservoir for recreational fishing. Fish present in Lake Houston include catfish, largemouth bass, white crappie, and bluegill.

Boating and fishing are both popular recreational uses of the lake. At the northern end of the lake, Lake Houston Park also has facilities for camping and hiking.

A quick trip from Cedar Rapids;  Put in is just east of Troy Mills at a new boat ramp.  Fish the holes for bass, crappie, walleye and northerns.  A nice float with a take out at the Paris bridge.  Start early in the day if you plan to fish a lot so you have enough daylight to get to the takeout.  In many cases, you'll be the only one on the river.
